Following Lindsey Vonn and Aksel Lund Svindal earlier this year, Austrian ski racer Marcel Hirscher confirmed his retirement from the sport at the age of 30.
Hirscher is the current overall World Cup champion, a title he has won eight times from 2012 through to 2019 winning more Crystal Globes than anyone else in history.
However following his marriage and then the birth of his son last year he says his priorities have changed. He made his retirement announcement at a press conference, broadcast live on prime time Austrian television recently.
Among his many achievements Hirscher has won 67 World Cup races, the third in the world for downhill skiing. The only skiers to win more are Ingemar Stenmark (86) and Lindsey Vonn (82).
He has also has two Winter Olympic and seven World Championship gold medals as well as being voted five-time Austrian “athlete of the year” (another record).
