Swiss ski resorts found themselves in the media spotlight recently when photographs appeared on social media platforms showing what appeared to be skiers and snowboarders in lift queues failing to socially distance.

While neighbouring ski nations have been ordered by their governments to keep their ski lifts closed, Switzerland decided to open its resorts in the run up to the festive period because the country believes the wintersports industry is too important to its economy.

Alain Berset, the country’s health minister, recently said ski resorts can stay open – at least for the time being – as long as there are strict safety measures in place to stop the virus from spreading.

Following the social media images, Verbier has put out a call for what it calls ‘Covid Angels’ to help maintain pandemic-spread-prevention measures over the Christmas and New Year holidays from 19 December 19, 2020, to 9 January, 2021.

A job description says Covid Angels will inform visitors on the measures in force at the communal, cantonal and federal levels, and raise visitors awareness of compliance with existing protective measures to combat the spread of Covid-19. They will also enforce existing protective measures combat the spread of Covid.

The job description adds that applicants should have an open and outgoing personality, a good knowledge of the region, the ability to work independently, French as a mother tongue and a good knowledge of English plus the ability to work outdoors at 1,500m altitude.

The latest date for applications is 14 December.
