Mikaela Shiffrin has cemented her place in skiing history by becoming the all-time leader in World Cup victories, surpassing Ingemar Stenmark’s record of 86 wins.
The American ski racer won her 87th World Cup race in Are, Sweden, on 11 March 2023, breaking the record held by Ingemar Stenmark and solidifying her position as the greatest skier of all time.
Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmark won his last race – no. 86 – on 19 February 1989 and had held the record for the most Alpine World Cup victories since then.
Mikaela’s 87th victory came 12 years to the day after her first World Cup race, as a 15-year-old, at a Giant Slalom in Spinderuv Mlyn, Czech Republic.
The wins have been achieved in 30 different venues across all six different disciplines, making her the only skier ever who managed to win at least one slalom, giant slalom, super g, downhill, and parallel race.
The ski racer’s 53 slalom victories make her the alpine racer with the most slalom World Cup victories ever. She has also won seven crystal globes in this discipline, holding the record for the most discipline globes.
Her success has been achieved on 25 different Atomic Redster models, from the Redster Doubledeck in 2012 to the Redster Revoshock in 2023.
“Mikaela’s achievement is an incredible feat that showcases her dedication and hard work in the sport of skiing,” said Atomic Racing Manager Christian Hoeflehner.
“Her performances have been nothing short of exceptional, and we are thrilled to see her become the all-time leader in World Cup victories.
“The entire Atomic Family congratulates her on this historical milestone and looking forward to seeing her continue to excel in the years to come.
“Mikaela’s accomplishments in the sport of skiing are recognised as being truly remarkable, and she has become a role model for aspiring athletes around the world.
“Her success is a testament to her talent, hard work, and dedication, and she will go down in history as one of the greatest skiers of all time.
Mikaela’s home town area prepares to celebrate her new World Cup record
A ‘Mikaela87’ celebration is being organised by local officials in Vail, Colorado in honor of Mikaela Shiffrin. It is being held on Sunday 2 April at 4pm at Solaris Plaza.
Entertainment, guest appearances, and other celebratory activities will give the people of Mikaela’s home valley, and others around the region and nation, the opportunity to show their appreciation and celebrate her remarkable achievements. Mikaela will be present at the free-to-attend event along with other dignitaries and luminaries.
The American ski racer was born and raised near the Vail/Beaver Creek ski resorts, where she trained in her youth as a member of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail. The 2 April celebration will highlight the value Mikaela has brought to skiing and ski racing. The themes of the celebration will honor the ‘GOAT’ (Greatest Of All Time) of ski racing and will focus around the number “87” as well as her many other records and achievements.
‘Mikaela87’ is being hosted by a local collaborative representing the greater Eagle River Valley community including: Town of Vail, Eagle County, Beaver Creek Resorts Company, Vail Mountain, the Towns of Gypsum, Eagle, Avon, Minturn, Eagle-Vail Metro District, and Edwards Metro District, CFC Collective, the Vail Valley Foundation, the Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame, and Ski & Snowboard Club Vail.
