Earning your turns – and your schnapps – in the ‘valley of the mountain huts’
KATY DARTFORD found that ‘skinning up’ had a whole new meaning when she visited SalzburgerLand in Austria
I’m sweating out what I’m sure is pure Austrian schnapps. But just a few more meters and I’ll be rewarded with views across Salzburgerland’s Grossarl Valley and – of course – lunch on the summit of the Filzmooshörndl at 2,189 meters, followed by a mouthwatering untracked descent.

Decathlon slide 500 jacket for under £60.
January may seem a little bit long for some people, but for others it carries a great sense of excitement – February half term is just around the corner. You might be feeling very pleased that you booked your trip last year but if you’re like me you’ll suddenly realise that you’ve got nothing to wear. Don’t let your boots ruin your ski holiday – get some expert advice from Captains Cabin
by Frank Baldwin – editor of the Skier & Snowboarder magazine
DID you know that ski boots wear out? I certainly didn’t. I only discovered this when I visited The Ski Shop Captain’s Cabin Sevenoaks, my local ski store, to ask for some advice after my trusty Salomons started to rub away the skin on my ankles last season every time I went skiing.

The Christmas magic of Innsbruck
Innsbruck is a special place to visit during the festive season says SUE FREEMAN who took full advantage of the shopping and skiing on offer
The Swarovski tree at the Christmas market in Innsbruck
TODAY we were ladies who lunch. Later we would be ladies who shopped in the Christmas markets. The next day we would be ladies who ski. Not a bad programme for a pre-season trip to the magical Tirolean city of Innsbruck, bound on all sides by snow-covered slopes looking very glittery and festive.

Sauna, games room, cinema room, wine cellar, ski room with boot warmers. Piste right outside the door. You know the sort of place I have in mind.

Faction skis on the free-ride fast track – thanks to a bunch of ski bums
by Rob Freeman
INNOVATIVE independent ski makers Faction claims to be the world’s fastest-growing ski brand, with 30,000 pairs being sold across 35 countries this year.
They are hand-made in Austria, and testing is carried out in Verbier – but it all started just 12 years ago when a self-confessed rag-tag bunch of Australian, Canadian, English and American ski bums set out to design tough, durable skis that would survive ‘without being serviced and could be thrown in the closet for the summer’ and, most of all, be fun to ski – in ski bum parlance, ‘would have a high stoke factor’.
