There’s no catching Bankes in race for Snowboard Cross Crystal Globe

Charlotte Bankes on the winner’s podium in Reiteralm

TeamGB Snowboarder Charlotte Bankes has lifted the Crystal Globe for being the overall winner for the season after winning her fourth Snowboard Cross World Cup competition of 21/22, at Reiteralm in Austria recently.

“What a day. Really happy to have push through today, was tough but worth it for sure. Thanks to my team for all your support and congrats to all the girls for a great battle today,” Bankes posted on social media.

Bankes, aged 26, was born in the UK at Hemel Hempstead. Her family moved to Puy-Saint-Vincent in the southern French Alps when she was four. She raced for France up until after the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, when she switched to representing Great Britain.

Bankes took her first World Cup podium finish for Team GB in a race in Breuil-Cervinia in December 2018 and took silver at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships 2019 held in Utah. She then won gold at the 2021 Championships last season in Idre, Sweden.

Bankes failed to make it past the quarter-finals at the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing last month but now has an unassailable lead on the World Cup tour with 569 points, ahead of second-placed Michela Moioli of Italy who has 456 points.

There are 100 points still to be won at the tour finals in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, but it would still not be enough for Moiolo to overtake Bankes.

Brookes also took 2nd place in the Slopestyle competition.

Raposo ends 54-year wait for Giant Slalom world cup points in Kranjska Gora

Britain’s Charlie Raposo secured Britain’s first Men’s Giant Slalom (Alpine) World Cup points in 54 years at Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, on Saturday (12 March 2022) with a 27th place finish, before backing it up with an even better performance in the second of the weekend’s dual World Cup races to take 16th spot.

A blisteringly fast, technically excellent second leg in Sunday’s race saw Raposo in the lead at one point, and marks the highlight of his World Cup career to date.

The two races marked the second and third times that Raposo has secured World Cup points in his career, the first having come when he opened his account in Lech / Zurs in November.
