The five-week season target is a far cry from the past when the French resort was able to open for snow sports 365 days a year.

Last summer year the glacier area saw exceptional spring and summer heat thaw the snow cover but conditions look better for this summer snow lying much deeper and cooler temperatures.

When fully open Tignes has 20km of glacier runs between 3,456m and 2,724m for skiers and snowboarders. There is also cross-country skiing on the Grande Motte glacier.

At other French resorts, Val d’Isere has announced a 4-week summer ski season from 10 June to 7 July on the Pisaillas glacier and Les 2 Alpes had adjusted its summer ski season to reflect changing weather, moving it forward to run from 1 May and throughout June. The resort will close skiing and snowboarding on the glacier if temperatures get too warm.
